I came across a statistic recently that stopped me in my tracks. According to Gallup’s 2025 State of the Global Workplace report, the UK has officially claimed the crown for having the lowest rate of engaged employees in Europe. We’re talking about a mere 10% of people who actually feel connected and motivated at work. While this might sound discouraging, I see it differently.
We’re sitting on untapped potential that could transform our entire workplace culture.
Think about it: when employees ARE genuinely engaged, everything changes. They’re more productive, proactive, and somehow manage to avoid the mysterious Monday-morning flu that plagues the disengaged masses. The question shouldn’t be how quickly can we improve these numbers, but how can we unlock the potential that’s already there?
What’s Behind This Engagement Crisis?
It’s not hard to see why this is happening. Between AI changing how we work, the pressure to always be available, and the shift back to the office without proper support, people are feeling overwhelmed. It’s all adding up, and teams are feeling flat as a result.
Here’s something interesting: it often starts at the top. Gallup found that manager engagement globally has dropped from 30% to 27% in 2025. When managers are disengaged, it creates a ripple effect throughout their teams. It makes sense when you think about it – energy and motivation are contagious, both positive and negative. So, if you want to boost performance and engagement, you need to start by re-energising your people and reconnecting them with their teams. One tool that’s often overlooked… a well-designed team retreat.

Why Company Retreats Actually Work…
Company retreats are more than just corporate speak for forced fun. When done right, retreats aren’t about making everyone pretend to be best friends or enduring the torture of “2 truths and a lie” (seriously, who enjoys that?). They’re about creating experiences that truly matter and allowing the company and people to connect as one.
- Rebuilding genuine connections. There’s something about having real, in-person chats that Zoom calls will never achieve. Informal moments like laughs over drinks and random conversations during a coffee break build the kind of trust you can’t get from a scheduled one-to-one.
- Getting everyone aligned on what matters. Vision-setting sessions help teams reconnect with why their work matters. People leave knowing not just what they’re supposed to do, but why it makes a difference and why they are valued.
- Developing your team. Practical workshops on modern leadership skills and peer coaching sessions where managers can learn from each other’s challenges. That’s where real growth happens, people.
- Prioritising wellbeing (and we mean it). Built-in time for movement, mindfulness, and switching off busy brains. Think nature walks, yoga on the beach and anything else that gets you feeling zen.
- Breaking down the walls between teams. Cross-department sessions that finally answer the age-old question: “What does marketing do all day?” Teams return with more empathy, better communication, and the shocking realisation that everyone’s just trying their best.

The Strive Approach
We at Strive recently decided to practice what we preach and whisked our team away to the gorgeous Dorset coast for our annual company retreat. Three days, seven flamingos, and enough new inside jokes to last us until next year. We ate ridiculously well, drank even better, and talked about absolutely anything BUT work.
Personal highlights had to be the private chef who spoiled us with a five-course feast, our Dragons’ Den-style challenge that brought out everyone’s competitive streak, and the utterly hilarious team quiz that somehow ended in an arm wrestle (don’t ask). In case you hadn’t noticed, there wasn’t a trust fall in sight.
The following week, everyone was still glowing with that rare combination of genuine rest and creative energy. Strive 1 – Engagement Crisis 0.
The Bottom Line
When only 1 in 10 UK employees feels engaged, we’re sitting on the greatest opportunity for transformation our workplaces have ever seen.
A thoughtfully designed company retreat isn’t just a nice break from unflattering fluorescent lighting. Think of it as a catalyst for unleashing the potential already in your team! A strategic investment in creating actual clarity, building genuine connections, and giving your people the kind of energy boost that doesn’t come from their fifth coffee of the day.
If this resonates with you and you’re considering how a retreat could benefit your team, we’d love to have a chat about what that might look like for your organisation. Every company and team is different, and the best retreats are the ones designed around your specific challenges and goals.
